Teeth cleaning in Bangkok: quick answers

What visitors and expats ask us before booking a cleaning.

How much is a teeth cleaning?

A dental cleaning in Bangkok costs 900–1,500 THB at HeySmile for scaling with polishing included. AirFlow stain removal is 1,590–1,990 THB. The check-up is included.

Can it be done today?

Often, yes. A routine cleaning is finished in one visit and takes about 30 to 45 minutes. You can go straight back to work or sightseeing afterwards. We are open every day 09:30–19:30.

Does scaling hurt?

Most people find it comfortable. Inflamed gums, or sensitive areas where the tooth meets the gum, can feel tender. Tell the dentist: numbing gel or local anaesthetic can be used for sensitive spots and for deep cleaning.

Scaling or AirFlow?

Scaling removes hard tartar above and below the gum line. AirFlow removes stains and soft film from coffee, tea, wine and smoking. Many patients have both in the same visit.

Scaling or AirFlow: which one do you need?

They do different jobs, and most patients have both in the same visit.

Scaling removes tartar

Plaque that is left on the teeth hardens into tartar (calculus), which brushing cannot remove. An ultrasonic scaler breaks it off the tooth above and below the gum line, and the teeth are then polished. Scaling is also called a dental prophylaxis. Regular cleaning is how gum disease, decay and bad breath are kept in check, so it is done at almost every visit. 900–1,500 THB, polishing included.

AirFlow removes stains

A fine jet of water, air and powder lifts the brown and grey film left by coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, including between the teeth and around braces or retainer wires. It does not scrape the tooth. 1,590–1,990 THB, on its own or added to scaling.

AirFlow does not suit everyone. Tell the dentist beforehand if you have asthma or another long-term chest condition, kidney disease, are on a low-salt diet, take diuretics or steroids, or are pregnant. In those cases your teeth are cleaned and polished in the usual way instead.

Cleaning is not whitening

Cleaning takes off stains that sit on the surface, so teeth often look brighter afterwards, but it does not change the natural colour of the tooth. If you want a shade change, that is teeth whitening, and it works better on teeth that have just been cleaned.

What happens at a cleaning visit

One visit, and you can go back to work or sightseeing straight afterwards.

Check-up first

The dentist examines your teeth and gums, checks where tartar and bleeding are, and tells you in English what your teeth need and what it costs. Nothing starts until you agree. Tell the dentist about your medical history first, in particular blood-thinning medicine, a heart valve problem or previous endocarditis, a pacemaker, diabetes, or if you are pregnant. Cleaning is safe in pregnancy, but the visit may be planned differently.

Scaling

Tartar is removed from the tooth surfaces and just under the gum line with an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments. Tell the dentist if any area feels sensitive.

Polish or AirFlow

The teeth are polished smooth, which is included with scaling. If you chose AirFlow, stains are lifted with the water and powder jet instead of a polishing cup.

Advice and next visit

The dentist shows you any spots you are missing when you brush, applies fluoride if you want it, and suggests when to come back. You pay at reception in cash, by card or by bank transfer and receive an itemised receipt in English.

How often should you have your teeth cleaned?

Most adults: every 6 to 12 months

Your dentist sets the interval from what they see: how quickly you build tartar, whether your gums bleed, and whether you smoke. The NHS advises that the gap between check-ups can be anything from 3 months to 2 years, decided by your dentist. If you have gum disease, 3 to 4 months is common.

Living in Bangkok and going home once a year? Many expats book a cleaning every six months here, which is far cheaper than waiting for a visit home.

Signs you should not wait

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Bad breath or a bad taste that keeps coming back
  • Visible tartar: hard yellow or brown deposits, often behind the lower front teeth
  • Gums that look red, puffy or have pulled back from the teeth
  • A tooth that feels loose, or a bite that has changed

Bleeding gums are not normal. They are usually the first sign of gum inflammation, which a cleaning and better home care can reverse. Left alone it can turn into gum disease that damages the bone holding the teeth, and that needs deep cleaning instead.

After your cleaning

The first day

Gums can feel tender and may bleed a little when you brush, especially if they were inflamed. Teeth can be sensitive to cold for a day or two. Keep brushing gently rather than avoiding the area. Contact us if bleeding, pain or swelling gets worse, lasts more than about a week, or if you develop a fever.

Keep the stains off

Teeth pick up colour most easily just after a polish or AirFlow, so try to avoid coffee, tea, red wine, curry and smoking for the rest of the day. If the dentist applied fluoride, wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything.

Between visits

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes. That is what stops new tartar and keeps the next cleaning short.

Teeth cleaning in Bangkok: FAQ

How much does teeth cleaning cost in Bangkok?

At HeySmile Dental Clinic scaling costs 900–1,500 THB and includes polishing. AirFlow stain removal is 1,590–1,990 THB, on its own or added to scaling, and deep cleaning for gum disease is 1,500–8,000 THB depending on how many teeth need it. The check-up is included and the price is the same for Thai and international patients.

Can I get my teeth cleaned on the same day?

Often, yes. A routine cleaning is finished in one visit. Message HeySmile Dental Clinic on WhatsApp or call 092-749-2829 for the next available time; the clinic is open every day 09:30–19:30.

How long does a teeth cleaning take?

A routine scaling and polish takes about 30 to 45 minutes. If there is a lot of tartar, allow up to an hour. Deep cleaning for gum disease takes longer and is sometimes split over two visits.

Does scaling hurt?

Most people find scaling comfortable, more like vibration and cold water than pain. Inflamed gums, and sensitive areas where the tooth meets the gum, can feel tender. Tell the dentist: numbing gel or local anaesthetic can be used for sensitive spots and for deep cleaning.

What is the difference between AirFlow and normal polishing?

Normal polishing uses a soft rubber cup and paste and is included with scaling. AirFlow sprays water, air and fine powder at the tooth, which reaches between the teeth and around braces and lifts coffee, tea, wine and smoking stains that a polishing cup leaves behind. AirFlow is 1,590–1,990 THB.

Will a cleaning make my teeth whiter?

Cleaning removes stains that sit on the surface, so teeth usually look brighter and feel smoother afterwards, but it does not change the natural colour of the tooth. For a shade change you need teeth whitening, and it works better on teeth that have just been cleaned.

Does scaling damage the enamel or loosen teeth?

Scaling carried out properly by a dentist does not damage enamel: the instrument removes tartar from the tooth surface, not the tooth itself. Teeth can feel slightly loose or more sensitive for a few days after heavy tartar is removed, because the hardened tartar had been holding them together like a cast and the gums underneath were inflamed. As the gums heal this settles, and any gaps that appear are the spaces the tartar was filling.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

Most adults have a cleaning every six to twelve months. Your dentist decides the interval from your gums, how fast you build tartar and whether you smoke; the NHS says the gap between check-ups can be anything from 3 months to 2 years. With gum disease, every 3 to 4 months is common.

Do I see a dental hygienist or a dentist?

At HeySmile your cleaning is carried out by a Thai-licensed dentist, not a hygienist. The same dentist examines your teeth and gums, does the scaling and the AirFlow, and explains what they find, all in the same visit.

Can I use Thai Social Security (ประกันสังคม) for a cleaning?

Yes. If you are insured under Thai Social Security, you can use the 900 THB per year dental benefit for scaling, fillings and extractions at HeySmile. Any amount above 900 THB is paid at the clinic.
