Root canal in Bangkok: quick answers

The four things international patients ask us first.

How much does it cost?

7,000–9,000 THB for a front tooth, 12,000–15,000 THB for a molar. A post and core adds 3,500–5,000 THB and a crown starts at 9,000 THB.

How many visits and days?

1–2 visits for most teeth, so plan 3–7 days in Bangkok. Some infected or curved roots need an extra visit. A crown adds 5–7 days for the lab.

Does it hurt?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you stay awake but should not feel pain during treatment. The tooth can feel tender for a few days afterwards.

Will I need a crown?

Often, for back teeth (molars and premolars) that chew hard or were badly broken down. Front teeth can usually be restored with a filling. The dentist tells you after the X-ray.

How many days do you need in Bangkok?

Share your travel dates when you book, so the visits fit your stay.

Visit 1: check-up, X-ray and treatment starts

The dentist examines the tooth, takes an X-ray and explains the plan and price in English. With your agreement the tooth is numbed, the infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned. A temporary filling protects it until the next visit. Simple cases can be finished in this visit.

Visit 2, usually a few days later: canals sealed

The canals are filled and sealed and the tooth gets a filling. For most teeth this completes the root canal itself, within 3–7 days of your first visit.

If you need a crown: add 5–7 days

The tooth is prepared and scanned or moulded, the lab makes the crown in 4–5 working days, and it is fitted and checked on your last visit.

Before you fly home

Ask for your English treatment summary and receipt. If the crown is not fitted yet, avoid chewing hard food on that tooth and see your dentist at home soon about the crown, as an unrestored back tooth can crack.

Signs you may need a root canal

A root canal treats infection or inflammation inside the tooth, so the tooth can be kept instead of removed.

See a dentist if you notice

  • Toothache that keeps coming back, or pain when you bite
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers after the food or drink is gone
  • Swelling of the gum or face, or a pimple-like spot on the gum
  • A tooth that has turned darker than the teeth next to it
  • A deep cavity, a cracked tooth or a tooth injured in an accident

Root canal or extraction?

Removing the tooth is quicker and cheaper on the day (800–1,500 THB), but it leaves a gap that usually needs a bridge or an implant later to keep your bite stable. A root canal keeps your own tooth, and a restored tooth can last many years with good cleaning and check-ups. The dentist explains both options with the X-ray in front of you.

Recovery and aftercare while you travel

The first few days

Numbness wears off after a few hours. The tooth and gum can feel sore or sensitive for a few days, occasionally up to two weeks. Take the pain relief your dentist recommends and tell us if pain or swelling gets worse instead of better.

Protect the tooth

Until the final filling or crown is in, chew on the other side and avoid very hard or sticky food. Keep brushing and cleaning between your teeth as normal.

Keep your paperwork

You receive an itemised English receipt and a treatment summary with the tooth number and materials, for your insurer and your dentist at home.

Who treats you

Root canal treatment at HeySmile is usually carried out by Dr. Kitichai Singharat, who focuses on root canal treatment, as part of a team of 10 Thai-licensed dentists who all consult in English. Meet the dentists.

Root canal treatment in Bangkok: FAQ

How much is a root canal in Bangkok?

At HeySmile Dental Clinic a root canal costs 7,000–9,000 THB for a front tooth, 9,000 THB for a premolar with one root, 9,000–12,000 THB for a premolar with two roots and 12,000–15,000 THB for a molar. A post and core is 3,500–5,000 THB and a crown starts at 9,000 THB.

How many days do I need in Bangkok for a root canal?

Most root canals take 1–2 visits, so plan 3–7 days. If the tooth needs a crown, add 5–7 days for the lab and the fitting visit.

Can I have a root canal and fly home the next day?

Often yes, but tell us your flight date when you book and ask the dentist first, especially if the tooth was infected or swollen. The dentist plans the visits so the tooth is sealed with a temporary or final filling before you leave. A temporary filling is not a long-term repair, so see a dentist at home within a few weeks to finish the tooth, and take the written summary with you.

Is root canal treatment painful?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the treatment. It is normal for the tooth to feel tender for a few days afterwards. Contact us if pain or swelling gets worse.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Back teeth that chew hard, or teeth that were badly broken down, usually need a crown to protect them from cracking. Front teeth can often be restored with a filling. Crowns start at 9,000 THB (metal) or 12,000 THB (porcelain-fused-to-metal or all-ceramic).

I have a toothache while travelling in Bangkok. Can HeySmile see me today?

Message HeySmile Dental Clinic on WhatsApp or call 092-749-2829 during opening hours, every day including Sunday (09:30–19:30) and we will try to see you the same day. An emergency pain-relief visit is 1,500–2,500 THB, and full treatment can follow later in your stay.

Will my travel or dental insurance cover a root canal in Bangkok?

That depends on your policy. You pay at the clinic and receive an itemised receipt and treatment summary in English with the tooth and the materials used. Ask your insurer before you travel which documents they need for a claim.
